Angela’s Lab | Getting into the Holiday Spirit

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a DIYer or a cook or a domestic goddess by any stretch of the imagination. Hence the reason I don’t generally talk about recipes and that sort of thing on Mom Style Lab. However, when compelled, I can sew, cook and craft decently well. With Halloween in the air, my daughter and I had a great time decorating our abode to kick off the fall season. Our little girl’s growing up so fast… and I want embrace every moment while holidays like Halloween are still a big deal. So, I make the extra effort to get in the spirit, decorate, bake and dress up for trick or treating. Because sadly, one day in the not-too-distant future, our little “pumpkin” won’t care as much about Halloween and all the fun surrounding it. As I get older too, I keep reminding myself about the importance of living in the moment and to focus on building special childhood memories.

The above decor we used is from a combination of Michael’s, Hobby Lobby and Grandin Road.

In addition to decorating and securing the perfect costume for Christina (to be revealed later on Instagram of course!), we were also inspired to make our pups a special healthy pumpkin treat with a super easy recipe I came across in Rachael Ray Every Day. Christina is always up for cooking, plus I love that we can bake without having a bunch of sweets at the end I inevitably end up polishing off while she’s at school. Result? Our pups loved them!

Pumpkin Pie Treats for Dogs

2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 cup of canned pumpkin

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix together the flour and cinnamon, then stir in pumpkin. The dough will be thick, so you can use your hands to “mix” the last part together. Then, roll out dough on a floured surface to about 1/4″ thick. We used heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies. Bake until golden and crunchy for about 30 minutes. The recipe also called for drizzling doggie yogurt drops (who knew??) on the top of each cookie, but we didn’t have these on hand so skipped that step. Makes approx. 32 small treats or 20 large ones.

Bella posed patiently for me before diving into the yummy treats! What a good girl.

Drop me a line in the comments below and let me know how your dogs like them!

Happy Halloween!
