Ask Our Style Techs | Considering a Crop Top

I’m seeing crop tops in all the fashion magazines. I want to try one out, but I’m not sure if I should. Do you have any tips on how to wear one? – Rachel P.

If you have a tiny waist and the abs to wear a crop top, we applaud you for all your hard work and/or genetics! Lucky girl. This trend is rampant in all the street style sections and fashion mags. However, this look is NOT for everyone. If you decide to go for it or maybe you flat out love it, we have some tips on how to wear it appropriately. And remember if you have a daughter she may decide she wants to wear one too… make sure you are okay with that before you  “role model” or keep it for your adult weekends away.

-Pair your crop top with high-waisted pants or a high-waisted skirt. You only want to have a sliver of skin showing. Repeat, a sliver. Unless of course you are trying out to be a back-up dancer for the Motley Crue reunion tour.

-Keep the colors simple if you’re trying this for the first time. In fact, think about sticking to black. Even black on black will help draw less attention to this daring trend and it’s a safer way to take the risk.

-Layering eases you into the trend. Try putting a long cardigan or blazer over your crop top. This will help cover you up more, but still allow you to try something new and not have it be the main focus of your look.

-Repeat after us, you are not Madonna or Beyoncé. These are their stage looks and part of their stage performance – their costumes are designed to be sexy and get a lot of attention. Keep the rest of your look ladylike or more conservative. Put your ’80s fingerless gloves and over-the-knee boots away.

Love the Mango top! Especially the sharp shoulder cut, which feels super modern & almost always looks flattering. Good find!

  2. […] crop top was everywhere this spring and summer. EVERYWHERE. Street style stars and 20-something starlets embraced it. […]
