Fancy Hair, Don’t Care

We’ve got the scoop on the best holiday hair tips & tricks from hair stylists Chanele Young and Brittany Axelson, both of The Waverly Salon in Old Town Scottsdale. Chanele, Brittany and Ashley Tyler (also with The Waverly) styled the models’ hair for our Arizona Midday “Glam Holiday Style” segment. Read on for their advice on how to get your best hair yet this party season, plus check out the looks featured on the show!

MSL: What should we do to get our hair in good shape for the holidays?
A fresh cut & color is always a good idea, plus a deep conditioning treatment (we love Unite 7 Seconds Deep Conditioning Masque) helps combat dry hair which is inevitable during the fall/winter months. Make sure to book any appointments you need with your stylist early — we get extra busy this time of year!

MSL: Your favorite easy, breezy updo that we can do ourselves?
The half-up/half-down style is quick and flattering on nearly everyone. Having hair frame your face works well, and even if you put your locks in a ponytail, you can still pull out pieces to frame and set off your face. To achieve the look below, simply pull an equal chunk of your hair from each side of your head back and clip in place. Then, smooth out and lift the top so you have an even look, and spray. If you need more volume on the top (most of us do!), it helps to spray dry shampoo (Unite 7 Seconds Refresher Dry Shampoo is our go-to!) on your hair first to rough it up, then backcomb small sections of your hair and comb down, pull back and clip in place. To add more texture to the look, simply add Unite Dry Finishing Texturiza Spray. Of course, if this sounds daunting, we can always do it for you at The Waverly! And remember, if you’re going to do it yourself for the first time, ALWAYS do test run a day or so before your event to make sure you like the end result.

MSL: Any tips & tricks for using hair accessories to change up our look?
We’re loving the use of bobby pins to create a design statement on your hair. Here on Karen, we formed a star pattern which gave her look more edge and sass! An pretty headband is like jewelry for your hair or a jeweled clip adds extra sparkle too. Another fun, super easy way to add sparkle is with Kevin Murphy Shimmer.Shine.

MSL: Your thoughts on how to take our hair from day to night?
Simply pull your hair into a high ponytail, then add a few curls with your curling iron and a pretty gold hair clip like we did on Mary and you’re ready to go. Again, hair accessories can quickly up level your look and give it a party pop!

MSL: Your favorite updo right now?
Braided updos are simply gorgeous if you have longer hair. They have a glamorous, boho chic vibe that is so perfect for holiday parties. It’s easy to elevate an updo with a braid! Note that curling your hair prior to braiding helps control flyaways from the layers in your hair. All you need are bobby pins and small, clear rubber bands to do this at home. Remember that polished isn’t key to achieving this look — it’s more of a romantic, soft vibe.

Thanks for reading, Adine! The looks are pretty easy to do — you just need a little time and practice. Although I like going to the salon and having them do it…. 🙂 xo
