Ask Our Style Techs | How to Wear Your Neutral Flats
Q: Is it appropriate for me to wear my neutral flats throughout the year? Should I go for a darker neutral shade or are nude flats appropriate in winter? – Christy P.
A: Neutrals are the cornerstone of getting dressed for all seasons. However, what’s great for one region of the country may not translate in another. If you’re talking about ballet flats or slipper loafers, those are absolutely appropriate for fall or winter in warmer climates like the Southwest or Southeast. It’s not necessary to put your light-colored nude flats to the side, but make sure you’re choosing an appropriate material such as patent or a durable pebble leather to last you through the wear and tear of winter. It’s always safe to go with a camel or cognac-colored nude, but sometimes people get nervous that those colors skew too “brown” in certain situations. Don’t be scared of that or fall into the “brown doesn’t go with black” mantra. It’s not true! Pairing all black with a cognac flat looks just as chic as all black from head to toe, and actually gives the outfit a bit of dimension.
