Angela’s Lab | Essential Fall Trends

Neiman Marcus fall previewLast week I had the pleasure of attending the Neiman Marcus “Let’s Talk Fall” preview media breakfast and saw firsthand what fashion guru Ken Downing has tagged as the looks of the season. After chatting with fellow members of the fashion press, we were treated to a fashion show of lustworthy looks. On Ken’s trend list for the season: Gray, Greens, Global Chic, Knit Dressing, Trousers, the Clutch, the Year-Round Bootie, and Statement Necklaces. These are all super-wearable trends that I can get behind and most are classic in nature with an updated twist. And I’m excited to see trousers on the list! Dresses and skirts have taken over in the last few years as the “look of the moment” and I love a feminine menswear look anchored by tailored trousers.

Noteworthy! Today’s the last day (8/20/14), but if you spend $350 on select regular-priced items online or in stores, you get a fabulous pair of Stephanie Kantis earrings! Just use the code FALLNM when you check out.

Gray. Gray is this fall’s neutral to own. It plays beautifully with most every color from black and navy to cobalt blue and eggplant to pastel pink. I am buying a new gray sweater and tailored trousers. Must-haves.

Knit Dressing. I am a huge fan of knits. Tailored knits that is. Knit dresses that skim your shape are so figure-flattering and forgiving. Cozy sweaters (not too boxy or bulky though!) with my skinny jeans and boots — that is my go-to winter outfit.

Greens. Emerald green, acid green, shamrock green, grass green, chartreuse… choose your favorite shade that is most flattering to your skin tone. Green looks fab with navy, black, gray, camel and burgundy…. just don’t wear it with red. You’ll risk looking like a Christmas decoration.

Trousers. A well-cut trouser, tailored to fit your shape, paired with high-heels or one of this season’s oh-so-haute, chunky menswear flats and a jacket projects a powerful, strong, don’t-mess-with-me vibe.

Global Chic. “Global Chic” encompasses the major trend of prints, mixed media and colors, exotic skins and textures. Leopard is global print that is also a classic — it never goes out of style. So chic and powerful — it screams look at me. Just don’t wear it head to toe. Generally one piece will do it. I love this top styled with the pants and booties.

The Clutch. These days, most of us don’t go anywhere without our cell phone. I’m sure most of you can identify with me and my feeling of panic when I’ve left my phone at home. The perfect clutch is one that holds your cell phone, plus other essentials, and goes easily from day to night. It’s also a great way to add a pop of color and personality to your outfit.

Statement Necklaces. Ahh, the statement necklace. We are so happy that you are here to stay. You have the power to turn the most basic ensemble into extra special and fashion-forward. We love you.

The Year-Round Bootie. I close with a look at the year-round booties on display for the event. Who doesn’t love a great bootie? Booties are so versatile and have the ability to up-level any look, from everyday denim to dresses. Wait is that a spot on those burgundy, fringe-embellished Pradas?? No, I think it’s a little bit of drool. Want these now and I’ll be wearing them with my new gray trousers.
