Ask Our Style Techs | How to Wear Leather Leggings
Q: How do I wear faux leather leggings and look age appropriate? And, can you recommend a pair that are affordable but don’t look totally fake? – Jennifer M.
A: Ahhh, faux leather leggings. We have a love/hate relationship with leggings in the house of MSL. We love that designers have updated them to look more like a tailored pant or modern skinny…but we hate that often times people don’t know how to wear them. We are more than happy to suggest ways to sport this look without appearing like you’re trying too hard, trust us.
The first thing you can do is make sure they fit. Often times people want to squeeze their legs in like a sausage casing and think if they can get them on, they’ll be good to go. Not the case! Please make sure you find a pair that is the right length, comfortable in the waist, and doesn’t hug the leg in unflattering places. Throw on a boyfriend sweater (lightweight if you’re chasing after kids) or a high-low, long-sleeved top that covers your backside, and you’re good to go.
Next, it’s all about fabric choice. Sticking to something that isn’t overly glossy, too dull or faded, or something with too much of a sheen. Real leather has a great balance of matte and shine and looks very luxurious. Make sure the faux option you select has the look and feel of real leather without the unreachable price tag. No one should be able to tell the difference at first glance. If you’re scared to go all leather, we suggest choosing a pair of stretch jersey and faux leather or leather and stretch denim.
Additionally, choose the right pieces to compliment this look. Downplay the rest of what you’re wearing by not doubling up on leather pieces, staying away from a lot of different mediums, and accessorizing only where it counts. This look should be worn tastefully and with purpose and should look NYC chic, not Jersey Shore disheveled.
