Ask Our Style Techs | Too Old for the Cut-Out Trend?
Q: At 45, is it okay for me to still wear the cut-out trend? I’m in great shape but don’t want to look inappropriate… — Susan B.
A: The cut-out trend can be worn at any age, it’s really all about placement and how much skin is showing. Of course, no matter how great of shape you’re in, as we age our skin just doesn’t look quite as firm and smooth as it once did… and remember, no trend is worth wearing if you don’t feel comfortable and confident. Save the side-boob and open mid-section cut-outs (sans sheer inserts or rocking abs) for the 20- and 30-somethings. Here are a few great ways to embrace the trend without going off track.
1 | The Cut-Out Shoulder
In our 40s and beyond, the “super haute for spring” shoulder cut-outs are a classy way to flash a little skin.
Dress, Givenchy. Classy, simple and chic — you can’t go wrong with adding this trend to an LBD. (Option for Less)
Dress, McQ by Alexander McQueen. What a cool print and super flattering line, especially if you have broad shoulders.
Top, Michael Kors. (Only $55!) Ideal for spring with white or denim, the grommets give it a nautical feel.
Here’s Angela working the trend in a gown at the Colleen’s Dream Foundation gala last year (which is coming up again this February 20th!).
2 | Cut-Outs with Coverage
Cut-outs with sheer, lace or perforated inserts provide coverage but still embrace the spirit of the trend.
Perforated Top, Lafayette 148 New York. Ideal with a skirt, trousers or jeans — super versatile! Oh and it’s the color of the year, serenity…
Gown, Jason Wu. The pretty lace offers coverage, but is sexy at the same time. Love!
3 | The Cut-Out Back
If you’re fit, the back is another area that is generally safe to show off in your 40s and 50s. How backless you go depends on how fit you are and your comfortable level.
Jumpsuit, Diane von Furstenberg. (On Sale!) A super feminine jumpsuit that is ideal for dress-up day or night.
Dress, Laundry by Shelli Segal. (On Sale!) The sweet, conservative version of a back cut-out.
4 | Off-the-Shoulder
Another chic look along the same line as cut-outs making a statement this season is the off-the-shoulder dress or top.
Dress, Trina Turk. We love this print and the diagonal lines are slimming!
Top & Skirt, Alice + Olivia. These boho separates are pretty together or with other pieces, such as denim.
Top, 5Twelve. (Only $37!) The essential striped tee gets an update with a sexy off-the-shoulder cut.
