How many of us can say we are working in the career we dreamed of having in our childhood? As a young girl, Michelle Glicksman wished that one day she would be running a celebrity & fashion magazine, and now as the editor-in-chief of So Scottsdale (a luxury lifestyle publication) her dream is her reality. In addition, she manages two other popular local Arizona publications, Uptown and Scottsdale Health.

Born and raised in New York, Michelle moved to Scottsdale in 1997 for sunny weather, palm trees, and a job in television. She left the television industry in 1999 (except for appearing in the occasional TV or radio spot) and began her editorial career in magazines. Michelle has been running So Scottsdale for 10 years and continues to love what she does for a living. The variety of responsibilities, from photo shoots and events to writing and editing, plus the amazing people she meets make for an exciting work environment.

Michelle made another major life change in 1999 when she married her husband, Dan, and they have two amazing kids — Brian (age 10) and Hailey (age 7 – almost 8). The family dog, Icy, rounds out the crew.

Philanthropy is another important part of Michelle’s life and she works to instill the importance of giving back in her kids. She is involved with a wide variety of organizations, from Scottsdale Leadership and the Phoenix Heart Ball committee to the PTO at her kids’ school as a room mom.

MSL: Describe your style in five words or less.
Classic — a hint of trendy. (To elaborate beyond the five words: I call it “New York style”—us New Yorkers seem to have a penchant for wearing a lot of black. I’m trying to break that habit though and work in some bright colors!)

MSL: What do you like best about your job? The biggest challenge?
I love meeting new people and learning about their lives. Telling their stories is an honor! The biggest challenge—time! Work seems to be 24/7, parenting is 24/7, and then there are all the other things that go along with life—like finding time to go grocery shopping!

MSL: Most exciting moment of your career so far?
Hmm… difficult question. Interviewing some of my favorite celebrities and fashion designers is always fun (sometimes I have to pinch myself—for example, Patrick Dempsey called my house!), but, while it’s not “one” moment, I think seeing my childhood dream of running a magazine come to fruition was pretty exciting.

MSL: What’s the one item in your closet you can’t live without?
My black jumpsuit. It was an impulse purchase as I was running past a store, and it has turned out to be one of my favorite pieces. Change the jewelry and shoes and it can range from casual to formal. It seriously works for any occasion. And, it never wrinkles!

MSL: Top three clothing items or accessories you’re buying for summer?
Wedge sandals, sundresses, and chunky necklaces.

MSL: Whose style do you most admire and draw inspiration from?
I think Anne Hathaway almost always looks stunning. She rocks the classic elegant look, but also switches it up sometimes with fun, out-of-the-box looks.

MSL: What is your favorite part of motherhood? Biggest challenge?
I love watching my children learn and grow, and the best part is hearing them say, “I love you.” My favorite part though is helping guide them through childhood, and helping shape who they will become and how they view the world. I love showing them all the ways they can impact others, whether it’s a small or large gesture. The biggest challenge is balancing my quality time with them with my long to-do list! And, finding a quiet place in my house where I can hide when they are in their whiny modes!

MSL: Tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised to hear.
I’m actually very shy. When I was younger people terrified me to the point that I barely talked growing up. Now I talk too much to make up for everything I didn’t say then—and to make up for being nervous!

MSL: What’s your best style advice for other moms out there?
Don’t forget about “you” in the chaos of family time and raising children. It’s easy to just throw on whatever happens to be in front of you and looks comfy, but you won’t feel your best then. Looking good helps you feel good too, so make time for it. That, and buy a good jumpsuit that never wrinkles!
