You’ve no doubt heard the phrase, “accessories make the outfit.” They not only complete your look, but they personalize it and allow you to make an outfit your own. Styling with accessories can also be a quick and relatively inexpensive way to change up your wardrobe each season.

Quick Accessory Styling Tips

Wardrobe basics are transformed by the perfect jewelry, hat, shoes or handbag. Put your own spin on the look and tie in your personal style.
The right styling can help you appear slimmer (e.g., a pendant necklace draws the eye down and elongates your figure) or nude shoes elongate your legs. An unbuttoned blazer over a sleeveless dress also draws the eye down and minimizes broad shoulders and waists.
A hat can hide day-old or flat hair, plus the addition gives you a sleek, pulled together look.
Play with proportions – if you’re petite with a small frame, stick with small jewelry so you aren’t overwhelmed. On the other hand, if you are tall or have an athletic or curvy build, larger statement jewelry will be more flattering and look more proportionate.
The same applies for handbags – larger bags work best for taller women and smaller bags for petite women.
Shoes are a key component of any look and the style you wear can make or break an outfit. Choose the right style according to your body type and cut of the clothing. For example, if you’re wearing cropped, flared pants (aka culottes) platforms, wedges or chunky sneakers are going to balance out the width of the pants. If you’re wearing a dress or skirt that is figure-hugging, a pair of flats or high heels will look refined and chic. The more voluminous the clothing, the chunkier the shoe.
