Ask MSL | Summer Capsule Wardrobe for 60+
Q: I just turned 60 and am having trouble finding cute summer styles that are age appropriate and petite, yet still fun and hip. I’d love any suggestions you have. — Susan R.
We firmly believe that age is just a number and when shopping for new wardrobe additions — no matter what our age — we need to factor in our style, what cuts are the most flattering on us, and what makes us feel comfortable and, well, great! Of course, realistically for most of us as we age, we prefer to be a little more covered up (i.e., slightly longer shorts, skirts and maybe sleeves too). Let’s face it our skin doesn’t look as smooth as it did in our 20s and 30s. Plus, who needs more sunspots! Sheer sleeves and lightweight silky fabrics are a terrific way to cover up without sweating under heavy fabrics and still beat the heat of summer. Since you are petite, it’s generally more flattering to have your shorts and skirts hit above the knee or maxi dresses can be flattering as well when worn with a platform wedge to add height. Midi skirts that hit mid-calf are not flattering for petite women in the majority of cases. Here are the top pieces we recommend for summer!
1 | Kimono. Wear it with jeans, shorts, skirts or even your swimsuit. The kimono is summer’s most versatile piece and adds flair to your look.
All Saints // Nordstrom // Karen Kane
2 | Tailored shorts. A summer staple, choose your preferred length, cut and color. Black, white, denim and even olive green are the perfect neutral canvas for the rest of your ensemble.
NYDJ // Caslon // Wit & Wisdom
3 | Fun tee. In the heat of summer, a comfy, chic, not-too-fitted tee is a must!
Cinq à Sept // Maggie Marilyn // Bobeau
4 | Floaty dress. A breezy summer dress in your favorite hue or floral print that pairs with sandals and heels will take you from patio dinners to a wedding. Remember if you buy a dress that’s a little long or boxy on your frame, don’t hesitate to have it tailored!
Michael Kors // Michael Kors // Eliza J
5 | Sheer-sleeve top. Cool enough for summer, but still offers coverage and looks sophisticated, these tops look great with shorts, jeans or a skirt.
Ted Baker // Vince Camuto // Liu Jo
6 | Go-with-everything wedges. Wedges in neutral tones add height and will pair with the majority of pieces in your summer wardrobe. TIP: Foot Glide is a great way to avoid blisters from the heat and new shoes.
Soludos // Sam Edelman // Calvin Klein
7 | Colorful handbag. A bag that makes a statement will up level basics and make any outfit look a little extra special. Plus, since you’re not lugging around things for your kids anymore, you can choose a stylish bag smaller than a giant tote!
Nordstrom // Ted Baker // Marc Jacobs
