Ask Our Style Techs | 3 Ways to Wear Bermudas

Bermudas

Q: I really like the coverage that Bermuda shorts provide, but I’m not sure they are flattering on me, nor am I sure what to wear with them. Your thoughts?
– Cheryl W.

A: A top trend in shorts this season, Bermudas are super versatile, flattering (with a few tips), and can be worn for casual Fridays at work, play time and date night — it all depends on the fabric, cut and how you style them.

Tailored to fit. If the style you buy doesn’t fit well and skim your shape, have them tailored. The leg of the short should be tapered, if not, the wider the leg, the broader your bottom half will look. Save the flared legs for flowy culottes (tips on styling culottes). And please NO pleats.

Fabric sets tone. Denim Bermudas are for play, while Bermuda shorts in a dressier cotton or sateen fabric can go to most workplaces or out to dinner. Darker colors are also dressier and more versatile.

Proportion is key. You’ve heard MSL say this before – make sure you look proportionate and achieve balance with your top, bottom and shoes. Wedges or platforms look terrific with Bermudas and ground your look. If you’re petite, a heel is always preferable to lengthen the line of your body. No stilettos or skinny-heeled shoes. Remember nude shoes help elongate the leg as well.
